How to use this estimate
Estimate your full 2025 tax burden, not just income tax
The calculator is an educational model of annual taxes as a share of gross income. It uses 2025 federal and payroll parameters plus separately labeled state and local estimates. It does not prepare a tax return or provide tax advice.
Updated · No credentialed tax review is claimed.
Direct answer
TrueTaxRate estimates all major household taxes as a share of gross income. Its default inflation-tax component applies the 2025 CPI-U purchasing-power loss rate to the average balance held in cash and unindexed nominal assets, while renter property tax is estimated whenever monthly rent is entered.
What the estimate includes
Federal income tax and modeled credits
State or territory income tax where modeled
Local income tax where ZIP coverage exists
Employee payroll or self-employment tax
Sales tax from taxable spending
Property tax entered by the owner or estimated for a renter
Vehicle registration tax or fee entered by the user
Federal and state fuel taxes from fuel use
Federal long-term capital-gains tax where applicable
Inflation tax on average cash and unindexed nominal balances, included by default
The model does not include every local rule, itemized deduction, credit, surcharge, indirect business tax, or cost of living. Use the documented amount whenever you have it.
Worked 2025 household example
This synthetic example uses a single W-2 filer in Texas earning $100,000, renting at $1,800 per month, spending $30,000 on taxable purchases, using 500 gallons of fuel, and claiming no dependents. It is a reproducible illustration, not an average or a recommendation.
| Federal income tax | Payroll tax | Other taxes | Total burden | TrueTaxRate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $13,614 | $7,650 | $5,744 | $27,008 | 27.0% |

Accuracy hierarchy
- Final tax-return, W-2, property-bill, registration, and receipt-based amounts are strongest.
- Document-derived income, taxable spending, and fuel-use inputs are stronger than defaults.
- State averages, ZIP fallbacks, renter property-tax estimates, and simplified tax rules are directional estimates.

Scope and limitations
Federal, state, local, payroll, and capital-gains inputs use 2025 source coverage. The calculator identifies estimates in its line-item assumptions; do not use it to file, amend, or decide a legal tax position.
